When the doctor examines the urine, it is said to have microscopic hematuria. Either way, it is important to determine the cause of the bleeding, as blood in the urine can appear on its own or be associated with other causes.
Sometimes the amount of blood in the urine is so small that it cannot be seen with the naked eye and is detected only when a urine test is done for some reason. Since there is absolutely no trace of blood in a healthy urine, it is important to have a urine test by a doctor. Blood is found in the urine when urine passes through the kidneys, bladder and urinary tract (tube).
Types of blood in the urine-
1 .Microscopic hematuria-
This type of hematuria cannot be seen with our eyes. In this, the amount of blood coming in the urine is so small that it can be detected only through a microscope.
2 .Gross hematuria-
In this type of hematuria, the urine becomes tea or cola-like in color, and sometimes it may just be blood that comes out of the urinary tract. In this we can see the blood coming in the urine with our own eyes.
Causes of blood in the urine-
Kidney problems are not always due to blood in urine, sometimes there can be problems of blood in urine due to some other reasons as well. What are the reasons due to which there is blood in the urine (hematuria), know-
1 .Urinary tract infection-
UTI is a common bacterial infection of the urinary tract. It can be cured with antibiotics. If it is not treated in time, it can take a serious form, due to which there may be blood in the urine. Another major symptom of a UTI is burning with urine (“dysuria”).
2 .Bladder or kidney stones-
Stones affect the kidney and the entire urinary system. Because of which sometimes the problem of blood in the urine of the patient also arises. In stone disease, there can also be acute pain in the kidney along with blood in the urine.
3 .Prostate gland enlargement in men-
The prostate gland, which is just below the bladder and near the top of the urethra, enlarges with age. This causes the urethra to shrink and there is a problem in passing urine, due to which there is blood in the urine.
4 .Kidney diseases like glomerulonephritis-
Diseases like inflammation in the kidneys, which have a bad effect on the filtering capacity of the kidneys, are also the reason for the presence of blood in the urine.
- Kidney cancer or bladder cancer
- Blood thinners such as aspirin, clopidogrel, warfarin.
- Sexually transmitted disease
- Low platelets for any reason
What are the warning signs of blood in urine?
Microscopic hematuria usually does not show symptoms. But if you have gross hematuria, then the color of your urine will change. Your urine may be pink, red, or cola-colored. Gross hematuria can also cause blood clots, due to which the patient may feel pain. Apart from this, hematuria also shows some other symptoms like-
- Fever- Fever occurs in hematuria when there is severe kidney infection or urinary tract infection.
- Severe pain- Stones in the kidney or urinary system can cause severe pain in the abdomen.
- Nausea or vomiting- If you have nausea or vomiting along with blood in the urine, it can indicate kidney failure or kidney inflammation.
What are the tests for blood in urine ?
If you also doubt that you have hematuria too, you can get some tests done as per the advice of the specialist. Through these tests, your specialist will be able to know what is the root cause of your blood in urine. Know which are those tests-
1 .KFT (Kidney function test)-
The KFT test is a set of tests used to determine kidney function. Apart from this, it is also called RFT (renal function test). This test includes KFT/RFT, blood urea/blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine and eGFR tests.
Some laboratories may also include urine analysis as part of the KFT/RFT to determine the amount of protein in the urine. According to experts the blood level of sodium, potassium, chloride, uric acid can also be a part of KFT. Kidney does the work of balancing all these chemicals in the body. The tests done to check this kidney function are called KFT / RFT.
Hemoglobin is a type of protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body. The hemoglobin test measures the amount of hemoglobin in your blood.
3 .USG-KUB(ultrasonography of kidney, ureters and bladder)-
In this test, an ultrasound scan of the kidney, ureter and bladder is done. Specialists use the USG-KUB test to determine the exact cause and treatment of a patient’s urinary tract diseases and abdominal pain.
4 .CT Scan-
Imaging tests such as CT scan are commonly done to detect kidney cysts, tumors and stones. This test helps the specialist to know the exact location of the cause.
5 .Cystoscopy test-
Cystoscopy test is done to know other diseases like hematuria. It consists of a thin tube called a cystoscope, with a camera and light at its end. The specialist inserts the cystoscope through the patient’s urethra into the bladder and examines the exact cause of the blood in the urine.
Treating blood in the urine-
Just as there can be many reasons for blood in the urine, similarly the treatment of this disease also depends on the reasons. After ascertaining the exact cause after getting the tests done as per the expert’s advice, the treatment will be decided according to your health condition and the severity of the disease.
If you have blood in your urine due to an infection, your specialist may prescribe a course of antibiotics. Apart from this, if the cause of blood in your urine is due to other problems like kidney stones, cancer etc., then the specialist will do other treatment for that.
